Of the many kinds of specialized writers, the garden writer has a unique responsibility to the reader. Unlike a sportswriter whose reader already knows the rules of the game, garden writers must introduce readers to a new "game". What if a sportswriter had to assume readers had no knowledge of football every time they had to write about a game.
That is why, a garden writer must first understand the science of horticulture especially when trying to educate the public about the environment. In a sea of products on the market, the science often gets lost, it is easier to talk about what a product may do than to explain the problem (i.e. why pests thrive). This is the key to writing education materials, to write accurately and in a form that is both interesting and intelligible to the beginner.
