Our Urban Oasis

The Berkeley Street Community Garden is composed of over 200 diverse families who share a common commitment to organic urban agriculture and access to healthy food. We were lucky enough to secure a plot in 2008 for our family. We spent hours working on it. We disassembled the old rotting beds and crazy arbors of the previous plot tenant. We rebuilt beds and dug out paths and added compost. We built a shed to house our tools (and baby stuff). We put a small lawn in so our son could crawl safely while we gardened. We packed the beds with vegies and flowers. It was/is a paradise. I still can't believe that I live in the city and have such a beautiful and bountiful vegetable garden. But most of all I love gardening with other people. Gardening can be very solitary sport, toiling away your backyard away from site. But our community garden is a place to come and talk to all kinds of different people (and cultures) as they garden. We love to cruise along the main path with our son in his wagon and check in on all our plot's neighbors and observe their garden's progress. In 2008, our little 10'x 12' plot provided enough vegies to basically feed us all summer and filled our freezer with good stuff for the winter. For 2009, I will be sharing much more about our progress and projects in my blog, so stay tuned for more veg happiness!
