Of the many kinds of specialized writers, the garden writer has a unique responsibility to the reader. Unlike a sportswriter whose readers already know the game so to speak, garden writers must introduce readers to the "game and its rules" each time, a challenging task.

In the sea of specialty garden products and ideas, the science often gets lost. I have spent 10 years garden writing, from books and magazines to seed packets and garden catalogs, enjoying the creativity of gardening but also communicating the science behind it.
